Our Top 20 Picks from the February 6 Vintages Release

Posted by: samy February 5, 2016 No Comments

IMG_3217The focus of this week’s release is on Southern France, an area we have long touted as a value-driven region of robust and spicy reds made from Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mouvedre. White wines play a lesser role, but rich Chardonnays and Viogniers can certainly be found, as can Picpoul – a racy, bright and mineral driven white wine that is probably most obscure but a perfect partner for fresh fish and seafood.

Of course, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner bubbly is what will be on everyone’s lips (both celebrating couples and commiserating singles) and we’ve highlighted four sparklers that we think will light up the night.

Not to be forgotten, Ontario has some wines you’ll fall in love with in this release, too. We’ve picked out three rich and juicy reds that are perfect for romantic dinners – no matter if your dream date is cuddling on the couch with pizza with Netflix, or putting on the ritz with a black tie, five course dinners.

CANADA

Creekside Merlot VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula 2013

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but this bottle is so gosh-darned pretty with it’s glass stopper and rose bloom etched into the bottle’s base that it could be hemlock inside and we’d still buy it. Luckily, nothing but excellent Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah rose here, showing a fragrant nose of light florals and tree fruit. Dry and crisp on the palate with flavours of red apple, strawberry, apricot and a chalky mineral finish, sipping this alongside freshly prepared mussels or spicy prawns would be trés bon. 89 points.

An elegantly Old World style wine coming from the relatively cooler Sonoma county.
