Join us Saturday, April 11 at 3pm as we talk about another one of Ontario’s premier wine destinations, Prince Edward County with guests Dan Sullivan and Lynn Sullivan from Rosehall Run.

(Listen to the podcast)

Dan, Lynn and Cam Reston purchased the 150-acre Hillier property back in 2000. Dan and Lynn were looking for land to start a vineyard and winery, and Dan says as soon as they saw the dirt it was their “wow!” moment. A mixture of clay and rocks is perfect for grape growing, but what’s really thrilling is what you can’t see: a bed of calcium-based limestone, which is exactly the type of soil found in Burgundy.

It’s not just the dirt that made their hearts beat a little faster, the drier climate of Hillier where the winery is located is on the same latitude as Dijon in Burgundy.

They planted the first vines in ’01, and a few more each year until ’04 when they had their first harvest. Now, nearly 11 vintages later, Dan and Rosehall Run have a stack of accolades from wine writers and critics around the world. Rosehall Run’s Pinot Noir took Double Gold at the Napa Valley Pinot Noir Shoot Out in 2012, and Dan was invited to speak at the prestigious region’s Pinot Conference.

Despite all the awards and reviews, both Dan and Lynn are quick to say 90% of the wineries’ visitors are everyday people looking to enjoy some wine and learn a little bit more. And, they would love it if you would make the drive to Prince Edward County to see it for yourself. With 40 wineries dotting the region, along with excellent restaurants, swanky hotels, a food truck festival, live theatre and a pretty spectacular beach it’s easy to make a weekend out of it.
