This week’s Wine for the Weekend travels to Italy with a little-known grape called Negroamaro. Literally meaning “black bitter,” this wine is anything but, though it does offer soul-warming vinous comfort for what looks like will be a very autumnal weekend.

With short ribs braising in the oven right now (recipe to come later), this deep and dense red is a fabulous fall find with aromas of red cherry and red currant, floral, blood and slightly stewy notes. The palate, is medium bodied, but rich with flavours of red berries, cassis, baking spice and Christmas cake. Bold tannins are balanced by vibrant acidity. Bring on the braised meats. Great value here.
