Wines we’re enjoying right now

If you’ve spent anytime in Toronto this summer, you know it’s hot, hot, hot! And the best way we know how to beat the heat is with some crisp and cool whites. We are big supporters of the Ontario wine industry so here’s what we quenched our thirst with:

Courtney: Tawse “Sketches Riesling” VQA Niagara Peninsula (approx. $17 at the LCBO)
I had this crisp and lively white with grilled salmon in a lime-butter sauce. The acidity in the riesling cut through the richness of the salmon and highlighted the bright lime flavours. Look for a nose of citrus and tropical fruit, with a mineral undertone.

Erin: Cave Spring Estate Bottled Chenin Blanc VQA Beamsville Bench 2007 (approx. $16 at the LCBO)
This is spectacular wine — originally from the Loire Valley in France — does incredibly well in the limestone soils of Beamsville. Filled with ripe apple and peach flavours, with some nice minerality. With it’s lip smacking acidity, it’s a fun alternative to riesling. I paired it with shrimp in a garlic-basil butter sauce over linguine — and thought it was delicious.
